Chocolate’s
benefits are as good for the heart as tea, apples or very mild aspirin in
reducing the risk of blood clotting, protecting against stress on the
heart and relaxing blood vessels, reported scientists from the University
of California at Davis to the European Society of Cardiology. They said those benefits proved to be better than those of
red wine.
According
to an Aug. 29 article in The Times of Britain, nutritional expert
Dr. Harold Schmitz, “said that, although calorific, chocolate is high in
antioxidants—natural chemicals that protect against disease.
A 40g bar of dark chocolate contained double the amount in a glass
of red wine. His studies also
showed that chocolate was rich in a strong antioxidant, procyanidin.”
The
British Heart Foundation’s medical director told The Times that
the research did not yet prove chocolate prevents heart disease.
Mars funded the research presented. |
