In his teens, native New
Yorker David Liebman watched John Coltrane live at the Village Vanguard
and found jazz. Seventy-five
CDs and albums under his leadership and nearly 200 original compositions
later, Liebman and his quartet are coming to Erie to play a benefit
concert for Billy’s Friends Foundation for Children with Disabilities on
Sunday, Oct. 20, in the Niagara Ballroom at the Avalon Hotel (16 West 10
St.).
“Erie musicians and music
lovers will be blown away by these four jazz musicians, and Dave Liebman
in particular,” says Tony Stefanelli, bass guitarist for local jazz
group Cat’s a Bear and owner of the concert’s underwriter Romolo
Chocolates. “We brought him
to Erie in 1996 and the select group that heard and met the band left the
concert in awe. You don’t
want to miss him this time around.”
After playing the
saxophone/flute position with the group of legendary Coltrane drummer
Elvin Jones, Liebman reached the zenith of his apprenticeship period
touring and recording with Miles Davis from 1970-1974.
He explored his own music at the same time and, following a 1977
world tour with Chick Corea, formed the David Liebman Quintet.
In 1991, The Dave Liebman
Group was formed, with Phil Markowitz on keyboards, Vic Juris on guitar,
Jamey Haddad on drums and Tony Marino on bass.
The group has recorded several CDs and play-alongs as well as
touring Europe, Japan and the United States.
One of their most representative CDs is New Vista on the
Arkadia label. Liebman’s
most recent release is The Unknown Jobim exploring the music of
Antonio Carlos Jobim.
After a performance
Indianapolis’ Jazz Kitchen, Jay Harvey wrote in the Indianapolis Star:
“In Liebman’s solo on the tenor sax…he came closest to
evoking his hero, the late John Coltrane, still a formidable influence
even on a player as self-possessed and imaginative as Liebman.”
Liebman teaches around the
world at universities and clinic settings and founded the International
Association of Schools of Jazz in 1989. In 1997, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Music degree
by the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland.
Leibman was nominated for a Grammy award in the category of Best
Jazz Solo for his rendition of My Favorite Things from Thank You, John
(Arkadia) in 1998. In 2000,
Liebman was inducted into the International Association of Jazz Educators
Hall of Fame for his contributions to jazz education.
The
$12 ticket price includes the 8 p.m. concert as well as a chocolate and
wine intermission courtesy of Romolo Chocolates.
All proceeds from the concert benefit Billy’s Friends Foundation
for Children with Disabilities. Our
