Our Fish is Coming!  Our Fish is Coming!

September/October 2001

At Romolo Chocolates, we might be displaying our GoFish! fish last, but we wanted him to be all he could be.

This summer, Erie has been in a fish frenzy as local patrons and artists take part in a public art extravaganza called GoFish!  The 100 fishy works of art are displayed for the public around Erie.  We are ecstatic to be able to sponsor the last of the fish, which will be on display outside of our store on West 12 Street.

Right now, most excellent artist Bill Hanna is putting the finishing touches on the fish—due to swim over to Romolos in September.  In the meantime, we’d like to introduce our fish to our customers…

Our Fish Story

Once upon a time in the waters of Lake Erie, a bass was playing.  He jumped out of the water and swam as fast as he could, then jumped some more.  Suddenly, he saw beautiful red pebbles on the lake bottom close to the Liberty pier.  He swam as fast as he could with his fishy tail swish-swishing to investigate these red gems.

First, he swam around and around them, just looking at their red dimpled surface topped with a funny green cap.  Then, he pecked at them. Peck, peck, peck with his fishy lips until—oops—he sucked one right into his mouth!

Well, this bass had never eaten such a sweet, juicy treat before.  He didn’t know they were strawberries, but he did know he liked them!  So he ate, and ate until every last one of those berries was gone.  Now, if the bass could have seen himself, he would probably have made a surprised fish face for he had turned bright red to match the berries he had devoured.  But he had no idea and jumped up out of the water with happiness, filled with the delicious treat he had eaten.

It was at this precise time that Emily, Danté and Baby Milan were eating ice cream on that very same pier.  Emily (smart, resourceful girl that she is) had brought along her jar of Romolo Chocolate Supreme Topping and was pouring it over Danté’s ice cream.

Danté screamed, “look!” and pointed down at the water.  Emily turned to see--still pouring chocolate sauce--and coated the jumping red bass in sweet, gooey chocolate.  Of course their mother, being a great believer in catching her kids on camera, happened to snap a picture at that same moment—capturing the red bass covered in chocolate on film in all of his glory.

It is that photo that Bill used to reproduce our wonderful fish, lovingly called “Chocolate-covered Bassberry.”

If you haven’t had the chance to tour the fish sites, grab a map (available at the public library, Maritime Museum and many downtown businesses) and take a walk.  You can also see the fish at the GoFish! web site at www.gofisherie.com.  We invite all of you to welcome our fish to the pond—come and visit us!
